Third of May and Guernica

“Third of May” and “Guernica” “Third of May” (1808) by Francisco Goya and “Guernica”(1937) by Pablo Picasso are both pieces of art in which the main purpose was to communicate an issue of concern from the artists that created them. Analyzing the two pieces of art is essential to understand the strong impact these painters had and still have on their audience. Destruction, death, lost souls and violence are some of the things that come to mind as first reactions when looking at the paintings.
“Guernica”, is dark on its entire, possessing cool colors and no signs of warmth. The painting is composed by distorted figures scattered through out the painting. The artist used anatomical features that created human like figures with an obvious expression of confusion on its faces. The lines and colors as visual elements were used very efficiently by the artist. The use of jagged lines contrasting the curvatures create a chaotic feeling in the midst of such cool colors.
The shading around the painting creates a feeling of space, even considering the overlapping figures and the lack of space between hem. Within the shading we appreciate implied lines. It is likely that the artist used a limited palette for this art work. Unity is presented through the use of curvatures of lighter shades in the middle of dark colors establishes the point of emphasis on the painting. One of the focal points within the paintings is likely the bull like figure on the top left corner because the rest of the figures are looking towards it.
“Guernica” exposes devastation, of more than just a few individuals, caused by a chaotic or tragic event. Picasso produced this art work to the German bombing of Guernica. His believes that the world was turning into a violent place causing great devastation was captured into this amazing piece of art.
