Government Spending on Education The United States has never been known for its high education scores and academic programs. The test scores are disappointing with how much money the U.S spends , more than double the average of other countries. Even with this knowledge President Obama wants spending on education to continue to increase. Although huge sums of money are being moved the federal department of education still has a budget and decides where it wants to use it. What programs does the government spend its money on According to James Hayashi, a Writer for USC Rossier online, US spending on education ranks number 1, in 2011, 806 billion was spent followed by Japan which only spends about 160 billion. The combined spending of the top 5 scoring countries wouldn’t match that of the U.S. Currently we spend about 5.5% GDP which is still a hefty amount. Around 900 billion dollars annually on education which is more than the average of every other country. Despite this the US only ranked 9th in science and 10th in mathematics in 2011. In world education rankings U.S. is rated average scoring around 500 out of 600 in math and science . Furthermore our scores have had minimal improvement while other countries are seeing a rise in scores. A major indication that more money without the right programs does not always produce better results and the US should rethink what programs it should or should not invest in. It is clear that a changes should be imminent as evidence from the scoring.
The department of education spending has steadily risen over the last decade. She also mentions that every year education spending has increased, up 300 billion dollars since 2003.
