Of Mice and Men: Analysis of Characters

Of Mice and Men Essay If you had the choice, would you rather be a fish or a bird? Do you think it’s better to exercise in the morning or at night? In life there are many decisions. Not Just in life, there are also many decisions book characters have to make. Depending on what you are being asked, decisions can be easy or hard to make. The book Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is a story about decisions. Candy, a character in the book, is an old man that has to make a hard decision during the story. Carlson complains that Candy old dog stinks and suggests for

Candy to “take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head,” to which Candy responds: “No, I couldn’t do that. I had ‘IM too long. ” You can tell that this was a hard decision for Candy. Candy had probably grown attached to the dog. After Slim and Carlson do a little convincing, it results in Candy weakly giving permission to kill the dog, “Aright?take ‘IM,” he says. It is sad that Candy dog had to die. However, it might have been for the best because the dog was pretty old. That was a very hard decision for Candy to make throughout the story.

Another character making a decision in this book would be Leonie. Curler had been bruising Leonie up and he was calling out to George, “Make ‘um let me alone George,” and that led to George chanting, “Get ‘IM Leonie! ” At that point, Leonie didn’t know what to do so it was hard for him to decide what to do. It is an easy decision to make in that sort of situation, but for Leonie it was different. In the end, Leonie got a hold of Curlers fist and broke it making Leonie cry out, “l didn’t want hurt him” and “you toll’ me to George!

Lien’s decision made him feel bad because he hurt Curler badly. If Curler hadn’t gotten so mad about Leonie smiling, he wouldn’t have hurt his hand. Leonie made the decision to defend himself in that situation. I think the book had a lot to do with decisions in life that you have to make. Some of them will be hard. Others will be easier. In the book, I like how John Steinbeck made the decisions characters made realistic. It was similar to the way people in real life might do things. This is why I think the story, Of Mice and Men, is about decisions.
