Ethical Values

Introduction For the past few years we have been studying ethics and values, from a textbook. But we all know it can only represent things until some point. For this we have decided to do a project in which we test the people around us for the values we have been studying throughout these years. The purpose of these activities is to prove this values and see them physically represented in our society, but to find out the quality of values around us. We have set three main experiments, the first one leaving trash around the garbage can and seeing if anyone bothers to pick it up.

This one is very impel because people do not usually relate it to values, but we believe taking care of our planet is a main value we should all have, which can be represented as respect for your environment. The second one consists of us giving candy to children but asking them to Just take one and see if they take one or a bunch. This experiment is an example of a day to day experience that anyone has had and proves how much respect someone has for authority represented in a simple way.

The third one is a bit more complicated, consisting in us leaving money on the floor so that someone takes it. After the person grabs it we will return and blame the person who did not take it to see if the one who did confesses. Because money is involved here if you do not confess it would be considered as stealing which is one of the most important moral issues. We expect results to be high on values because we live in an educated environment in which people are supposed to have values and be aware of what they are.

Location All of the experiments took place inside our school, in the cafeteria, hallways and football court. Therefore the people related to this project are students, teachers and aren’t mainly. 1st experiment. In this experiment we left some garbage paper around the trashcan. Our goal was to see how many people out of 1 5 would pick it up and throw them to the trashcan. We think that the main problem in this is that we may have education or values, but some don’t have the values or we’re not enough careful or conscious.

The results were unbelievable, no one, of the 15 attempts, picked them up. The only person who did was the cleaning lady when she was replacing the garbage bag. 2nd experiment. On this one we gave some kids candies, but warned them to take only one so it would e enough for the other kids to have. We made it better on this one; we had 10 out of 15 who did it correctly as we said. I think that in this case the difference was in a significant amount because we gave the directions and most of them respond according to these. Rd experiment. We left money on the floor nearby a group of people and if someone grabs it we would blame other one and see if the one who grabbed it tell us that he has it. The results we had were 13 out of 15; by these statistics we could say it was the one which and more success than the other experiments We think that the reason tot having more success on this one it was because everybody knows that you could have worse consequences and is a more serious issue.

Conclusion Even if these experiments are very simple and we are not testing a lot of people, we think that this could be the start for make a campaign about promoting the values and principles on our community so we teach them not only to help, but to know solutions and spread the word. We think this a very important issue to work on it; with this information and statistics we could make the society conscious about this en big problem, the students, at least, need to be aware of how this could affect their future or the world’s future meaning we are the next generation who could make actions on this world.

The conclusion was that people on our community did not have the values as we thought. We think that if we did some of these experiments, or some of the ones our classmates did, with a lot more people, we could do some percentages that would be very interesting and shocking. With this, people would become interested and we could promote values.
