Azoth sighed exasperatedly. Slamming another magazine into his weapon, before taking cover behind a ruined concrete barrier; adjacent to the highway divider. A ganger screamed with glee as it spotted him moving to cover, giving Azoth the precious seconds of notice before continuing to throw itself clear over the barrier. Shouldering his rifle Azoth sighted the pitiful creature.
Four years ago, it could have been a beautiful young woman. Now what stood before him was nothing short of a monster. With most of her hair fallen and ripped out, what was left revealed bloody sores, oozing puss in succession with her screams. Without hair nothing was left to frame her gaunt, sneering face. Two shots rang out, without hesitation, as she landed on his side of the highway, slamming deep holes into her chest cavity and skull. The second ganger paused briefly, landing just in time to be offset by the chunks of gore and grey matter splattered against him. This pause became fatal as Azoth fired three more shorts in rapid succession.
The third was slightly more cautious, choosing to dart around into a massive hole left in the side of the divider. The barrel of his gun was leveled at the entrenched Azoth, but he was too quick. Bracing himself on the barrier, a single shot routed out the gangers chest. He went down with a scream, as did the fourth that sprinted around the barrier several seconds later, seemingly unconcerned with his dead and dying comrades. Azoth frowned–surely he knew that he was waiting for him? Then it clicked. He didn’t care, because something worse was behind him.
He tumbled away from the barrier as a golden spear point erupted through the two foot-thick concrete and was hoisted over the head of a blue angel with resplendent silver wings. Its face was impossibly serene as it shattered the half-ton barrier on a nearby parked car, withdrawing its spear as easily as Azoth might reclaim a stake.
