11th SeptemberOn the 11th of September, 2001, four passenger air planes were hijacked by terrorists. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, by an organization called Al Qaeda. And on this day, these two, big skyscrapers were crushed down to dust, and almost three thousand people died, all in a few hours.
This is a diary written by Jean Potter, who was in the north tower of the World Trade Center on the 11th of September, when this horrifying thing happened. I was getting ready to go to work that day, and I was just thinking, that it was just an ordinary day. I was wearing my lavender suit and my black shoes with flat heels, and I was also wearing a silver chain with the number 10617, around my neck. That was the number of my husbands fire fighter’s badge. I was also thinking about my dear husband Dan, we had been married for eighteen months, and I was very grateful for him, because he was a wonderful husband, and we were very much in love.
When I arrived to work and was sitting by my desk, I saw a big air plane flying in to the building. I was terrified and ran down the stairs, but there were so many people walking down, that it was going very slow. On the way down I was only thinking of two things: the first was, that it was very good that Dan, my husband, was not on duty on the fire station outside the World Trade Center. The second thing was, that it was a good thing that I was wearing flat shoes.
It took me almost an hour to walk down the stairs, and almost everyone around me were crying, sobbing and completely confused. When I finally got out and stood in front of the building, I heard a terrible noise, I looked back and saw the south tower collapse. People around me were screaming and shouting as they looked back and saw the building fall down.
