A Midsummer Night’s Dream This is an essay on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a famous play that was written by William Shakespeare. It was written around three hundred years ago. I will be focusing on Act three scene two, as it is a very important scene in the development of the story. This is the scene where the four main characters in the story are confused about who is in love with whom.
The four main characters in the play are Helena Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius.
The play starts in Duke Theseus’s palace in Athens. A man named Egeus is having problems with his daughter so he brings her to the Duke’s palace for help. Egeus’s daughter Hermia does not want to marry Demetrius – the man who her father had decided she would marry. Instead Hermia wants to marry the poet Lysander and Hernia’s father is now threatening to murder her for disobeying him. Duke Thesus reminds Hermia that the law allows fathers make their daughters do anything they want. He tells her that there is only one other choice, which is to become a nun and never marry anyone.
Because the Duke gives them little choice, Hermia and Lysander decide to run away from Athens and consequently run into the woods to make plans on what to do. While they are in the woods they run into Helena, Hermia ‘s best friend. Helena is very upset because she loves Demetrius who is due to marry Hermia.
As night falls, the four lovers from Athens are all lost in the woods. Lysander and Hermia are still trying to run away, from Athens. Demetrius tries to chase Hermia and Lysander while Helena on the other hand is begging Demetrius to love her back.
In another part of the woods a group of workers are practising to perform for Duke Thesus on his wedding day. They are all very funny characters. Nick Bottom is the loudest and funniest character. He is also very bossy and always wants to play all the roles of different characters. Puck, another worker sees Nick bottom and thinks it is a good idea to play a…
