Purposes of Government
“A war where every man is enemy to every man,” where people live in “ continual fear and danger of violent death.” Thomas Hobbes, an english political philosopher, describes what life would be without a government. The definition of Government: The laws and people that run a country, state, county, city, or town. It protects the rights of individuals and promotes the common good. All governments tax, punish, regulate and restrict their citizens in order to help accommodate peace and protection. The federal government has many purposes in which it protects the citizens and the the principles that the nation was built upon.
One of the governments objectives is to establish justice and insure domestic tranquility. The citizens agree to a social contract in which they are provided protection of lives and property in exchange for being regulated in tax. These principles help avoid groups of individuals from settling their conflicts by rioting and fighting. For example, Somalia never had a stable central government which led to many civil wars that eventually took over the government. (Eaglen) In addition, the government provides for the common defense. Warfare has been linked to the origins of government in order to be protected by other civilians wanting to take over. A country needs to not only protect its citizens from one another, but it needs to organize to prevent outside attack. Historically, they have raised armies, and the most successful ones have trained and armed special groups to defend the rest. Now in the twentieth century, governments have formed alliances and fought great world wars in the name of protection and order. A country that does not have a secure government, fails to control violence and endangers human lives and property within the country.
