The United Nations was formed 24 October 1945 and the day is celebrated as the United Nations day, the aim of the United Nations was to bring all nations in the world together to work for peace, develop good relations between the nations, to work together to help people to live better lives, prevent poverty, diseases, to stop environmental problems, they encourage people to respect each other’s rights and also help nations achieve these aims.
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio Summit, Rio Conference, and Earth Summit was a major United Nations conference held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to create a road map for sustainable development a plan which is known as Agenda 21.
In 2012, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development was also held in Rio, and is called Rio+20 or Rio Earth Summit 2012.
Agenda 21 sees sustainable development as a way to revoke both poverty and environmental degradation. A major theme is to put an end to poverty by giving poor people more access to the resources they need to live sustainably, including information and skills. It calls upon governments working in participation with international organisations, business, regional and local governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and citizens groups to develop national strategies for sustainable development in an on-going process of consultation and global democratization from local to international levels from 1993/4 – 1997.
This strategy is implemented in the UK through another strategy called local agenda 21 which works with local council to make sure when people are recycling, they do it effectively.
