Kindness was a very prolific author for twelve years until he suffered a traumatic head injury that had a devastating impact on his creativity output. Kindness received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Victoria and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Iowa. He has also taught in the English department at the University of Calgary for five years.
In Canella’s works he focuses on two disparate fictional universes. The first one focuses on the lives of the Native Americans. Critics who have read his stories dub them “stereotype-based humor” objecting to Canella’s portrayal of the Native American voice. Kindness replies, “It’s the oppressed and the oppressor that I write about. The way that oppressed people survive is by making fun of the people who oppress them,” is almost like survival of the fittest. (The Canadian
Encyclopedia) The second topic Kindness strongly portrays is the magnificent world of baseball. In his book Shoeless Joe he expresses the power of dreams and what someone will do to achieve them. He developed a sense of hope for all baseball fans. Kindness went for the underdogs of major league baseball like Shoeless Joe Jackson himself. This particular work is “Wild… Romantic… Unconventional… A Triumph of Hope,” a positive review that really gives the main idea of Canella’s meaning of Shoeless Joe.
The Boston Globe) In the year of 1997, Kindness suffered a traumatic head injury as the result of a devastating car accident. That never stopped him in pursuing his life long career as a writer.
